Stuchbury Takes Gold
Kings Lynn shale thriller

2007 has been a dominant year for Buckinghamshire's Kevin Stuchbury but securing the Gold roof was never going to be a forgone conclusion. 575 Darren Cottrill was pre race favourite with a recent feature win at Belle Vue and racing from pole on his preferred shale surface. Others in with a shout were 161 Mark Allen, 473 Chris Bracher, 149 Marc Radforth and a little further down the grid, defending champion 1 Chris Fort ensuring the first few laps would prove to be lively. Throw in a couple of Kiwi's in the shape of NZ15 Paul Mabey, NZ16 Clive Pritchard on row 3 and starting off the back row NZ48 Scott Gallop, the race was all set to be anyones.

On the day it was hot and sunny. The track staff provided an excellent racing surface which had plenty of water which ensured a slippery surface for at least the first few laps. Kings Lynn has a reputation as a track that dries out rapidly which meant those running the highly tuned 3.5 engine might struggle early on.

On the drop of the green it was 161 Mark Allen who forced his way through on the inside and took up the running until turns 3 and 4 of lap one when he was punted wide and four abreast coming out of turn 4 it was Cottrill that surged ahead in the slippery conditions. Cottrill quickly established a good lead with Stuchbury a few lengths back and NZ15 Paul Mabey holding third. A pileup on turns 1 and 2 claimed NZ16, 212 Frankie Wainman and punctured 149 Radforth. 210 Smith sustained rollcage damage and the race was cautioned to remove 212 Wainman from the racing line.

On the restart Cottrill moved clear and opened up a gap with Mabey comfortably third. Fort punctured but continued to circulate. Allen overhauled Mabey who was slowing with a sick engine and Cottrill came close to losing the lead when negotiating Fort running on a rear inside rim forcing 575 to go around Fort with Stuchbury  closing in. The lead duo hustled past Fort who then spun and drove on opposite around the plating to end up facing the wrong way against the fence on the entrance to turn 2.

Cottrill again took a few lengths out of Stuchbury but, the track was beginning to dry and Stuchbury began to look quicker. Perhaps the most controversial event in the race happened at about 3 quarters distance when a back marking Neil Stuchbury happened to pull back on track after an altercation right in front of the leader. Stuchbury visibly slowed and Cottrill hesitated before forcing his way past. Cottrill now had 131 on his back bumper as he entered turns 1 and 2 and was forced wide and around the back marking NZ15 car. Stuchbury was up the inside and away and gone leaving Cottrill in his dust, literally as the track was by now void of any moisture. Cottrill struggled to stay on terms with Stuchbury as the laps ran out with Stuchbury's only scare being Chris Fort pulling across his bow on the last lap. Kevin took the flag by asome car lengths from a dejected Cottrill and Mark Allen who had made a decent recovery after being relegated down the field early doors.

Stuchbury was understandably delighted. "I didn't expect to win it, I've raced in 6 World Finals and this is the first one I've finished !" Darren Cottrill was very disappointed "Neil Stuchbury held me up which allowed Kevin to close in on me, I don't know if I would have been able to hold Kevin off at the end, it's a shame I didn't really get the chance to try"

An amazing drive by 9 Andy Hulse all the way from the back saw him home in 4th with Chris Bracher 5th.
