A sunny
bank holiday Monday, a large crowd and 32 Hotstox
in the pits including three New Zealand drivers in the shape
of NZ15 Paul Mabey, NZ16 Clive Pritchard and NZ48 Scott
Gallop. The Kiwi's were able to get half a dozen laps
practice to enable the lads to get to grips with their cars
and the track. This session determined their starting
positions in the National Championship which perhaps was
somewhat unfair on the guys but they took the decision on
the chin and Paul Mabey would be starting inside row 3 with
Clive Pritchard alongside and Scott Gallop lining up at the
back.
The cars lined up in grid order in the pits and came out on
track for their parade lap. Each and all received a
commemorative award before jumping into their rides for two
rolling laps, the first following the water truck around.
Kings Lynn dries out remarkably quickly and on such a warm
day the track needed plenty of water to help keep the dust
down.
The main movers and shakers are documented
in the previous update below, so here follows a roundup of
the rest of the runners.
The first lap ticked by without major incident but second
time around 149 Marc Radforth was turned across the pack and
spun up against the fence on the entrance to turn 1 to be
collected by NZ16, 212 Frankie Wainman, and 210 Matt Smith
who was also run into by 355 Bryan Andrew causing Smith
rollcage damage. 42 Rob
barber made it by as did 1 Chris Fort, 117 Rob Scriven and
Jay Kellett. Frankie ended up stranded on the apex while
NZ16 Pritchard limped on to the centre and into retirement.
Next in trouble was 184 Carl Boswell who spun in much the
same spot (turn 1) and was tagged by NZ48 Scott Gallop whcih
helped Boswell point in the right direction while Gallop
collected his car together and set off again. A sideways 179
Richard Arrowsmith clipped 212 which helped bring out the
yellows to allow Frank to take his car to the infield. A
solitary exhaust box was also retrieved as the track was
cleared for a restart in single file. The leaders got a
clean start as the green flag flew once more which is more
than could be said for 12 Michael Scriven who over did it on
turns 1 and 2 which slowed Barber's progress. 9 Andy Hulse
was making very good progress and was by now half way
through the field. As Hulse came upon his sparring partner
210 Matt Smith, Smith tried to dislodge Hulse but failed and
slipped off the number 9 back bumper. 473 Chris Bracher then
spun Smith 2 laps later as he lapped the 210 driver and 184
Boswell spun Forta further 2 laps in as Fort was circulating
on a rear inside rim as his tyre had punctured and
eventually fallen off. Fort kept it going and very nearly
took the leaders out who negotiated the number 1 car round
the outside coming off turn 2 as Fort then crashed into the
still wrong way round Smith. The field began to spread out a
little as the remaining laps went by without much incident.
The leaders had lapped up to 5th position as the chequered
flag fell with Hulse completing his amazing drive to capture
4th. Bracher taking 5th after a tough first few laps he came
back well but the horse had already bolted by that stage.
6th went to 113 Neil Stuchbury again all the way from the
back with 129 Paul Davies bringing his car home in 7th which
is a great result for the likeable Crewe driver. 8th was
Kevin Thornton who was suffering with an abscessed tooth and
9th was 315 Rob Shackleton who was putting in some good laps
but as usual got caught up. One day this mans luck will
change ! Rounding out the top 10 was the unlucky NZ15 of
Paul Mabey who was running a very strong 3rd before his car
slowed and relegated him way down the field. Overall, the
race was superb with plenty of incident and lead changes.
The next
race was heat 1 with 251 James Bower, 269 Craig Bird, 304
Chris Mellor and 363 Craig Brough joined the fray and the
Kiwi's all made the grid. 131 Kev Stuchbury elected to
retire from the rest of the meeting and collect 75 points
for his troubles. Neil Stuchbury loaded up to deny Cottrill
retribution (see previous update !). 184 Boswell and 72
Thornton spun on turns 1 and 2 and were collected by 315
Shackleton as 147 Colin Taylor led followed by 363 Brough.
Scott Gallop joined the pileup next time by as the leaders
scrambled by with Pritchard now up to 3rd with Hulse running
2nd. 575 Cottrill was making good progress and was past all
the blues and into the yellows. 184 Boswell clipped and spun
Gallop as Cottrill now ran 3rd as Pritchard retired. Colin
Taylor disappeared to hand the lead to Hulse as 184 Boswell
ran into the back end of 355 Andrew to half spin himself.
149 Marc Radforth suffered a flat inside rear but continued
to circulate at near race pace. Cottrill caught Hulse on the
last bend to spin the leader out and claim the win with
Michael Scriven taking 2nd , Taylor 3rd and the unlucky
Hulse recovering for 4th.
Heat 2 saw
Taylor and Kellett duelling for the lead as 117 Rob Scriven
spun exiting turn 2 to face the traffic as Gallop tagged him
on his way by. 439 kellett led with 184 Boswell in tow but
the two clashed and tangled with Kellet spinning and just
clipping Boswell on his way round to also spin the 184 car.
12 Scriven benefited and took up the lead. NZ15 Mabey
collected the plating as his car looked to be over heating
but rejoined. 315 Shackleton and 112 Jamie Marson clashed on
the exit of turn 2 to leave Marson facing the wrong way up
against the plating. The inevitable happened as NZ48 Scott
Gallop was unsighted and ploughed head long into the unlucky
Marson causing plumes of steam to pour from Gallops car as
it limped to the infield. Yellow flags brought the field
under control to allow Marson's car to be recovered where
extensive damage was diagnosed. On the restart 12 Scriven
led from 328 Michael Boswell and 314 Steve Bowman. 1 Chris
Fort bumpered Radforth wide as 161 Mark Allen and 575
Cottrill moved into 2nd and 3rd. Fort half spun 328 Boswell
with Kellet also getting by. Scriven took the win from Allen
and Cottrill with Fort 4th and Kellet 5th.
The final
began with Kellett taking the lead on a watered track.
Cottrill relished the conditions and set off through the
field as Bracher scrapped with Gallop which saw Bracher
spun. 12 Scriven spun early on to end his hopes of taking
the feature. Gallop was great entertainment as he tangled,
bumped and scrapped with anyone in his vicinity. Cottril by
now was breathing down the neck of Kellett and inevitably
made it by to race off into the distance. Gallops car was
smoking now but this did not deter the NZ pilot. Cottril
duly took the honours with Kellett a galant runner up with
Mark Allen 3rd, Colin Taylor 4th and 117 Rob Scriven 5th.
A very
great day's racing !
