Stuchbury's British

Not content with the European, the National Championship and the National Points Championship, 131 Kevin Stuchbury also stormed to victory in the Skegness staged Forestry Commission British Championship on the 14th Oct.

32 cars turned out including lady racer 404 Kirsten Ashcroft, Buxton commentator 288 Gary Osbourn, 334 Dave Atkinson, 281 Lee Summers in his new car and Skegness irregular – 575 Darren Cottrill. A 2/3rds format was adopted and Stuchbury opened his account taking the first heat from 473 Chris Bracher and 210 Matt Smith. Heat 2 went to 237 Daz Parker (son of Nigel) who looked very comfortable in the old man’s car and although Nigel won’t admit it, he was proud as punch. 149 Marc Radforth and 212 Frankie Wainman 2nd and 3rd 356 Mark Wright did a good job of holding out 131 Kevin Stuchbury for a good part of the 3rd heat but the Gold top secured pole position for the British with his second win of the day. 29 cars lined up in points scoring order with non points scorers at the back. 212 Frankie Wainman had Kevin Stuchbury out wide on the first bend and duly took up the running closely followed by Bracher, Andrew and others as Marc Radforth clattered into the fence with 334 Dave Atkinson in the 240 Tom Conwell car not too far behind him although it was a case of someone playing the old cannon shot off the reds. The race was red flagged with Marc in difficulties. Thankfully Radders was shaken rather than stirred and the cars lined up in race order with Stuchbury at the front having regained the lead. Second time around, Stuch showed the field a cleaner pair of heels as the rest scrapped over the placings. 575 Darren Cottrill was starting to work his way up the field after having poor qualifying heat results by his standards. Bryan Andrew ran second in the 355 car with Stuchbury keeping a comfortable buffer between them. 439 Jay Kellett clambered all over 315 Rob Shackleton on the seaside bend and flipped on his roof with Shacko perched on top. Kellett emerged unhurt and the cars lined up for the restart. Again, Stuch made a great start but 355 Andrew kept within striking distance over the remaining laps but agonizingly for Bryan, Stuchbury managed to just put enough distance between himself and Andrew who was also coming under pressure from Cottrill. At the flag, Stuchbury took the British Championship by two cars lengths from Andrew and Cottrill. 212 Smiler came home 4th with 237 Parker 5th in only his second Hotstox meeting – impressive !
